COMMUNICATING with PARENTS
Parents can be strong allies--helping our students do their homework and put effort into their learning. Here are two suggested approaches to involving parents in their children's learning.
To inform parents of how they might help their children with their language learning, consider sending home a Letter to Parents (Cam Fahlman).
If students are to begin studying a particularly violent or adult-themed film, it might prove wise to send home a proactive information letter (Wendy Knapman).

The brochure Getting to the heart of learning: How is your child doing in school? outlines some of the questions that parents should ask teachers to ensure that they understand how their child is being assessed in school (ATA).
Parenting Through the School Years: A Guide for Parents of K-12 Students is a 17-page booklet filled with practical suggestions intended to help parents ensure that their children do well in school. Topics include discipline, homework, parent-teacher conferences, school councils, the teenage years and working with teachers. The booklet is also available from the ATA at a cost of $2. To order a copy, contact the Association's Distribution Centre at 447-9400 (in Edmonton) or 1-800-232-7208 (elsewhere in Alberta).
