Joyce Purdy Session

Helping ELL Students

Joyce Purdy is a doctoral candidate attending the University of Alberta.  The following is a description of her session insightful session entitled "Talk Around Text for English Language Learners," presented at More Than Words.

Canadian classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse with children who speak languages other than English at home.  How can teachers effectively meet the language and literacy needs of our diverse students?  This presentation explored the value of discussion during reading events for the benefit of English language learners and English-only students.  Excerpts of dialogue from a case study of a grade 3 classroom were shared, and findings could be extended to any elementary grade.
