ELA General Outcomes and Student Learning

THE CURRICULUM

Alberta's ELA curriculum is world-class.  Student learning in ELA is articulated through 5 General Outcomes (GOs), each of which is described in more detail through a series of Specific Outcomes.

HELPFUL RESOURCES

ELAC EXCLUSIVE: Alberta teacher WENDY KNAPMAN has constructed a learning outcomes checklist to help teachers of K-9 ELA create effective learning units.

Guide to Implementation (2003) for Grades 10-12 English Language Arts also offers a learning outcome checklist to assist in the crafting of units.  AND dozens of classroom-proven practices to assist students' language learning.

Focus on Inquiry (2004) offers information and supports for implementing inquiry-based learning activities in the classroom. This guide is designed to assist teachers working on their own or in teams, with or without the support of a teacher-librarian or other library personnel.

Multimodal Literacies (2005) dovetails nicely with the Alberta programs of studies—particularly in its broadened definition of text.  Published by NCTE, this position paper supports the teaching practice of involving students in studying, responding to and creating a variety of texts in different forms and media.

Read to Live (2006)
– This multimedia resource supports literacy at the junior and senior high school levels. The resource provides information, strategies and audio/visual clips that encourage teachers and students to think about reading in a new way, focusing on the real-world contexts of home, community and workplace.
