ELAC's Annual Conference for 2008
Reaching Higher Ground
was held at the Jasper Park Lodge
May 2008
Jasper, Alberta

THANK YOU
Nicole Babiak and Nicole Lafreniere
for co-convening such a super conference!!
Our 2008 Conference theme, "Reaching Higher Ground," reflects the very reason why ELA teachers look forward to attending ELAC conferences. Participating in our Annual Conference
- gives us the impetus to "reach higher ground" by providing new ideas and additional supports
- revitalizes our teaching, helping us to meet our students' needs as well as survive what is a demanding and--too often--stressful career
- instills in us a sense of hopefulness--that through broader and deeper understandings we can achieve greater heights in our teaching.

This year's Keynote was Cris Tovani, author of I Read It, But I Just Don’t Get It and Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? as well as the video series Thoughtful Reading. In addition to teaching full time as a high school English teacher and reading specialist, Cris is an internationally-known consultant focusing on the issues of reading and content comprehension.

Edmonton-based author Marty Chan presented two sessions at the conference: “A Cheat Code For Writing Stories” and “Where Did You Get That Idea?” Marty signed copies of his books at the Young Alberta Book Society display table in the JPL Great Hall. Read his bio.
